Defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) will be facing off against five-time former winners Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2023 Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday. Both teams are bidding to join Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2023 final on Sunday.

This is the third time that GT and MI are going up against each other with Rohit Sharma’s side winning two of those matches. MI posted their second win over GT recently, when they thrashed the table-toppers by 27 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

GT had defeated MI by 55 runs when the two sides met earlier in the season in Ahmedabad. In the last match between the two sides, Suryakumar Yadav scored his maiden T20 century. For GT, opener Shubman Gill is in sensational form with the bat, having scored back-to-back centuries earlier in the season and is just 9 runs short of possibly becoming the youngest winner of the IPL Orange Cap.

In the bowling department, while GT pacer Mohammad Shami is leading the Purple Cap table with 26 wickets, MI’s Akash Madhwal produced the best-ever bowling figures in a Playoffs match – claiming 5/5 against Lucknow Super Giants in Eliminator. It will be interesting to see if MI will bring back Arjun Tendulkar to play in his first-ever IPL Playoffs match.

LSG are currently in 3rd position on the points table and a win over RCB will take them to the No. 1 position with 6 points from 4 matches.

This time they welcome Kolkata Knight Riders at Narendra Modi stadium in the day game of Sunday double header. The Hardik Pandya-led side has won both their matches so far in IPL 2023. They kickstarted the tournament with a bang as they beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to open their account. GT then beat Delhi Capitals at Feroz Shah Kotla cricket ground to continue their winning run. The form of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Rashid Khan has kept them going so far. Against KKR, GT will hope their captain Hardik also contributes with the bat.

One of the big blows for GT is the injury to their overseas pick Kane Williamson, who has already flown home after injuring himself while fielding during CSK match. He was going to control the innings for GT in this season. But in his absence, Hardik will have to play that role now. He was a perfect power anchor last year and GT expects him to deliver the goods in IPL 2023 too. 

On the other hand, KKR bounced back in style in their last game as they thrashed visiting Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Eden Gardens. If Starc is giving sleepless nights to the batters, the other ‘Mitchell’ – Mitchell Marsh – has sent the Indian bowlers on a leather hunt by hitting nearly a dozen sixes (11) across two games. Tackling ‘Mitchell The Menace’ will be topmost on the Indian team’s agenda.

The series is locked at 1-1 and the starry quartet of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav will have to bat out of their skins to stop the left-arm pacer, who is gearing up to once again bring the ball back viciously into the right-handers while taking a few away. A sea change on the technical aspect, as well mental make-up, will be the need of the hour, and Starc has exposed their frailties pretty badly.

The white ball games in India are mostly played on flat decks, where one can get away by hitting through the line, where one doesn’t need too much of feet movement. A batter can plonk the front-foot and hit deliveries across the line with a fair degree of success. But Starc, blessed with better skill sets, changed the questionnaire with deliveries that would either straighten in the off-middle line or cut back sharply towards leg-middle after a fair amount of deviation in the air.

The Indians have known what Starc has done for the longest time but they failed to factor in that conditions in Mumbai and Visakhapatnam would assist his bowling a bit more. In Mumbai, there was help off the surface but in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, the ball did more in the air than off the surface.
