WTC Final: Time to reformat for Team India | Cricket News – Times of India

The endless grind of franchise T20s & international cricket is now reality, meaning India’s players have to stay fit & adjust quickly, in just a few nets sessions, to play a Test in England on the heels of the IPL
At the start of the year, there was a lengthy meeting at a five-star hotel in Mumbai where some BCCI office-bearers huddled with India captain Rohit Sharma, who was present virtually, head coach Rahul Dravid and National Cricket Academy chairman VVS Laxman.
Their topic of discussion? ‘Workload management,’ a term bandied about by the board in the media to give an impression that something is being done about it.

The BCCI, it seemed, was a bit concerned with the workload of the players in the light of 2023 being the year of the World Test Championship final and the ICC ODI World Cup in India in October-November.
The after-effects of a long tournament like the IPL were visible and certainly played a part in India’s dismal campaigns in the 2009 T20 World Cup in England, and in the Test series two years later, which the team lost 0-4.
Another IPL later, we still have no solution to this problem. There was no sign of any player’s workload being managed during the IPL.

WTC Final: India and Australia records at The Oval

In fact, the last batch of the four Indian players supposed to be playing in the WTC final at Oval – Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane (CSK), Shubman Gill (GT) and Mohammed Shami (GT) – were locked in a tense IPL final, which stretched to three days, just a week before the Test.
Someone like Mumbai Indians coach and former South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher feels that a tournament like the IPL isn’t too much taxing because it involves playing just T20 cricket.
However, these are high-intensity T20 games in a short duration, with hardly any time left for the body to recover before the next match. Almost all the players carry some niggle or the other.

WTC Final: Acid test for Shubman Gill

At the start of the tournament, a report emerged that Rohit Sharma would rest for a few games, allowing Suryakumar Yadav to lead Mumbai Indians, but that happened in just one match. With MI’s qualification on the line, Rohit ended up playing almost every game in IPL 2023.
Not to forget, this was the first IPL post-Covid which involved the home and away format since 2019. It meant the players were on a usual ‘Bharat darshan’ trip, clocking thousands of air miles with its attendant hassles.
Add several matches which go deep into the night, and you have a situation where the body clock of the sleep-deprived cricketer goes for a six. A classic example was the reserve day of the IPL final, which saw the post-match ceremony finishing around 3.30 am!

That brings us to the million-dollar question. Will the players be fatigued going into the World Test Championship final against Australia?
“No, fatigue is definitely not a factor for international players. These players’ workloads have been monitored continuously. They should be raring to go and be able to give their best,” former India left-arm spinner and ex-national selector Sunil Joshi told TOI.
Barring Cheteshwar Pujara, who was enjoying another dream season for Sussex, all the other Indian cricketers were involved deeply in this rigmarole. In contrast, the Aussies, with a view to win their first WTC title and the Ashes, were more focused on getting as used to the English conditions as possible.

Being left unsold in the IPL auction in December proved to be a boon in disguise for someone like Steve Smith, who revelled as Pujara’s teammate in Sussex, getting some useful runs and game time in the UK.
The Aussie pace battery is also fit and raring to go. Skipper Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc decided to give the IPL a skip, while Josh Hazlewood played for RCB in just three games, in which he bowled 9 overs.
In a curious turn of events, the pacer flew back to Australia mid-way into the IPL due to an ‘injury,’ but was pronounced fit for WTC and the Ashes in a few days’ time.
The only Aussie players involved in both the IPL and the WTC final are allrounder Cameron Green, who had a stellar season for MI, and veteran opener David Warner, who captained a floundering Delhi Capitals campaign.

The turnaround in Ajinkya Rahane’s career

As they scamper to prepare for the big final while trying to put in a few meaningful practice sessions in the UK without even a warm-up game under their belt, India’s top cricketers are clearly in danger of being under-cooked for red-ball cricket.
Joshi, though feels that Team India “has had a good preparation”. “The fact that we are practicing at the Arundel Castle Cricket Club – a open ground where there’s a strong breeze – will help our cricketers immensely, as the ball will swing a lot there, and the bowlers will get an idea of bowling with and against the breeze.
“Form is important irrespective of format. If a pacer is hitting the hard lengths and a batsman is able to middle the ball, everything should be fine.”

This is the third time that GT and MI are going up against each other with Rohit Sharma’s side winning two of those matches. MI posted their second win over GT recently, when they thrashed the table-toppers by 27 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

GT had defeated MI by 55 runs when the two sides met earlier in the season in Ahmedabad. In the last match between the two sides, Suryakumar Yadav scored his maiden T20 century. For GT, opener Shubman Gill is in sensational form with the bat, having scored back-to-back centuries earlier in the season and is just 9 runs short of possibly becoming the youngest winner of the IPL Orange Cap.

In the bowling department, while GT pacer Mohammad Shami is leading the Purple Cap table with 26 wickets, MI’s Akash Madhwal produced the best-ever bowling figures in a Playoffs match – claiming 5/5 against Lucknow Super Giants in Eliminator. It will be interesting to see if MI will bring back Arjun Tendulkar to play in his first-ever IPL Playoffs match.

There is no role for an anchor in T20 cricket now: Rohit Sharma | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, has expressed his belief that T20 cricket has undergone significant changes, rendering the role of anchors irrelevant in the format. In a recent interview with Jio Cinema, Sharma discussed his evolving approach as a batter, acknowledging that his change in mindset has resulted in failures but stating that he wants to explore new possibilities.
“As I see it, there is no role for an anchor now. It is just how T20 cricket is played these days, unless you are 20/3 or 4, which is not going to happen every day,” Sharma commented.
He emphasised the need for a change in mindset to keep up with the game’s evolution, saying, “If you do not change your mindset, you are going to get smashed. People on the other side are thinking about the game differently and taking it to the next level.”

Sharma believes that all seven batters in a team must play their roles effectively, regardless of the outcome. He stated, “I believe that if you get a good score, it is good, but even if you get a good 30-40 off just 10-15 or 20 balls, it is (just) as good because you are doing the role for the team. The game has changed.”
Having played T20 cricket for a considerable time, Sharma now seeks to approach batting differently, even if it means occasional dismissals. He mentioned his recent failures against Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings but remains undeterred in his pursuit of a new style.
“I just want to play that way and see what I can do. I have played this format for a long time and in a certain manner. But I want to do different things now. While doing that, (if) I get out, (it) does not really bother me,” Sharma asserted.
When it comes to power-hitting, Sharma recognizes that he cannot match the strength of players like Tim David, Kieron Pollard, and Cameron Green. He focuses instead on timing the ball and finding the sweet spot, highlighting his belief in the effectiveness of well-timed shots.

cricket man2

“I know (that) I cannot match the power of guys like Tim David, Kieron Pollard, and Cameron Green. They are powerful hitters; they can hit 100 metres easily,” Sharma explained.
Sharma also praised fellow batsman Suryakumar Yadav for his approach and credited his success to the hard work he has put in over the years. He mentioned Yadav’s consistent performances in domestic cricket and predicted a bright future for him.
The Mumbai Indians and India captain acknowledged his team’s status as a collection of superstars but emphasised that the franchise has played a pivotal role in developing these players through its scouting process.
“It is a superstar team, but it is because the franchise has worked for it. All these players are part of the big auction pool — we have bought them,” Sharma stated, highlighting the efforts of the team’s scouts in identifying talent such as Jasprit Bumrah and Akshar Patel.

cricket match2

Sharma also expressed his confidence in the potential of young players Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera, predicting that they would become “huge stars” for both Mumbai Indians and India in the future.
As Sharma prepares to lead India in the final of the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup later this year, he reflected on the 2011 World Cup, admitting that he did not watch most of the tournament due to his disappointment at not being selected. He described it as a setback year that prompted him to make significant changes to his game and routines.
With his revamped approach to T20 cricket, Sharma aims to push boundaries and adapt to the ever-changing dynamics of the game, setting his sights on achieving success in the upcoming tournaments.

MI’s Suryakumar Yadav Retains Top Spot In Latest ICC T20 Batters Rankings; Babar, Rizwan Far Behind

Suryakumar Yadav continues to sit atop the ICC T20 batters rankings despite hundred by Babar Azam in a recent T20 clash vs New Zealand. In the lastest update, Suryakumar with 906 rating points, is more than 100 points clear of second-placed Mohammad Rizwan (798), the Pakistan wicketkeepe and batter. Not to forget, Surya is the only India batter in the top 10 of the batters rankings. India’s star cricketer Virat Kohli is the next best Indian, at 14th spot, in the rankings.

Babar Azam is in good form in the ongoing New Zealand tour of Pakistan. He smashed a brilliant hundred in the 2nd T20 clash. However, with score of just 1 in the 3rd T20, Babar failed to make the cut into top 3 of rankings. He is placed at No 3 with 769 points.

With Surya not playing T20Is at the moment, Babar and Rizwan had a great chance to eclipse the India batter at the top. However, the difference between the Number 1 and 2, 3 is so much that it may require two massive knocks from Rizwan and Babar to topple Surya at the top.

Hardik Pandya is second on the all-rounders’ list, behind leader Shakib Al Hasan. Ten wickets in three T20Is has helped Haris Rauf catapult Shadab Khan to become the top-ranked Pakistan bowler. Rauf picked up back-to-back four-wicket hauls against New Zealand in the ongoing T20I series, winning the Player of the Match in the first game.

The Pakistan quick was just ahead of Shaheen Afridi last week and behind Shadab Khan, who was 12th in the T20I bowling rankings. Ten wickets spread across the first three T20Is have seen Rauf move up five places in the rankings to occupy the 11th spot.

Meanwhile, Ish Sodhi (620) and Shaheen (624) have also moved up by four places and two places respectively with the others around them dropping points. The other big movement in the rankings came from Sri Lanka with Prabath Jayasuriya continuing his magical start to red-ball cricket.

IPL 2023: Nitish Rana, Suryakumar Yadav Pick Piyush Chawla’s Spell As Differentiator In MI’s Five-Wicket Win Over KKR

On a day when Venkatesh Iyer blazed to a 49-ball century; Ishan Kishan hammered a fifty off 21 balls and Suryakumar Yadav smacked a 25-ball 43, veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla bowled the most economical spell, conceding 19 runs in his four overs and picking one wicket.

Rival captains Nitish Rana of Kolkata Knight Riders and Suryakumar Yadav standing in for Rohit Sharma for Mumbai Indians picked Chawla`s thrifty bowling as the differentiator as Mumbai Indians romped to a five-wicket victory against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Sunday.

It was the first afternoon start for Mumbai Indians at Fortress Wankhede in IPL 2023 and they made the most of this opportunity to register their second successive victory in four matches.

Venkatesh Iyer had given KKR a superb start with a belligerent knock of 104 off 51 balls during which he hammered six fours and nine sixes. But the rest of the batters failed to support him as the Knight Riders were restricted to 185/6 in 20 overs. Andre Russell was the second-highest scorer with 22 not out.

It was mainly the 34-year-old former India star Chawla`s economical bowling that helped Mumbai Indians put KKR batters under pressure. After restricting KKR to 185/6 in 20 overs, Mumbai Indians chased the target with 14 balls remaining to win the match by 5 wickets.

“I think we were 15-20 runs short. Credit to PC bhai (Piyush Chawla) for the way he bowled. I feel quite bad for Venky (Venkatesh Iyer). You play so well, score a century in a day game in Mumbai and you end up on the losing side. I feel bad for him. If our best bowlers are going for runs, there`s not much to say,” said KKR skipper Rana after the match.

Suryakumar Yadav too pointed to Chawla`s bowling beside the blazing start provided by Ishan Kishan as the reason for his team`s victory. Kishan hammered a 25-ball 58 and with Rohit Sharma (20) helped Mumbai Indians race to 72/1 in Power-play that laid the foundation for their victory.

“It was a legendary spell [Piyush Chawla]. He put his hand up under pressure,” Suryakumar said after the match.

“At the Wankhede, in day games, 160-170 is a good score but (Ishan) Kishan got us off to a great start. I took my time in the first five-seven balls and thought if I could get my eye in I could get a score. We know that if the top order gives a good start, what kind of firepower do we have lower down the order,” said the Mumbai Indians` stand-in skipper.

Suryakumar Yadav Suffers Eye Injury While Attempting Axar Patel’s Catch – Watch Video

During match 16 of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday, Suryakumar Yadav’s missed catch resulted in injury. The incident occurred on the fourth ball of the 17th over of the DC innings when Jason Behrendorff bowled a length ball on the middle stump, and Axar Patel lofted it straight over the bowler’s head towards long-on. SKY lined up for the catch but lost the trajectory of the ball in the floodlights, and it hit his fingers, smashing just over his right eye. The ball eventually went over the boundary ropes for a six as Suryakumar Yadav fell, clutching his face.

The MI physio rushed to check on Suryakumar Yadav, and after a concussion test, he had to be taken off the field for further treatment. Although Axar completed his maiden fifty, he eventually fell to Behrendorff with Arshad Khan taking a brilliant catch. This incident highlights the importance of proper lighting in stadiums during night games, as it can make it difficult for fielders to track the ball’s trajectory.

It also reminds us that injuries are an unfortunate part of sports, and players must prioritize their health and well-being to avoid long-term damage. Suryakumar Yadav’s injury serves as a cautionary tale for all players to always remain vigilant on the field and take necessary precautions to avoid injuries.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals were able to score 172 runs in 19.4 overs against Mumbai Indians, thanks to contrasting half-centuries from Axar Patel and captain David Warner. Despite starting well, Delhi were struggling at 98/5 in 12.3 overs until Axar scored 54 off 25 balls, hitting four fours and five effortless sixes to reach his first IPL fifty. Warner, on the other hand, made an unconvincing 51 off 47 balls. Mumbai’s bowling struggled initially, but veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla and left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff picked up three wickets each to bowl out Delhi in the final over.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 172 in 19.4 overs (Axar Patel 54, David Warner 51; Piyush Chawla 3/22, Jason Behrendorff 3/23) against Mumbai Indians

MI vs CSK IPL 2023: Mumbai Indians seek turnaround against Chennai Super Kings | Cricket News – Times of India

Rohit’s men look to brush off poor start against Dhoni‘s Super Kings
MUMBAI: Twelve years after he captained India to a famous triumph the 2011 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium, the legendary MS Dhoni will, in what could be his last outing in this iconic venue, will lead the Chennai Super Kings against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in a blockbuster clash on Saturday night. That it is the first round of the ‘El Clasico’ of the IPL adds to the charm of the contest.

07:56

IPL 2023: It’s Rohit Sharma’s flair vs MS Dhoni’s acumen as MI take on CSK

It’s early days in IPL 2023, but, in his brief cameos of 14 not out off seven balls against Gujarat Titans and 12 off three balls against the Lucknow Super Giants, during which he smashed back-to-back sixes off the pacy Mark Wood, Dhoni has shown glimpses of his vintage spark. Arguably the greatest white-ball finisher of all time, the 41-year-old isn’t at his fittest, but he can still pack a punch when needed.
MI themselves won’t forget the damage he caused to them last year at the DY Patil Stadium, cracking an unbeaten 28 off 13 balls while launching a ferocious assault on Jaydev Unadkat to pull an incredible three-wicket win for CSK.
IPL 2023 SCHEDULE | IPL 2023 POINTS TABLE
While Dhoni is someone MI need to be wary of at the backend of the innings, the man who is likely to give them much headache at the start is Ruturaj Gaikwad. Having started the season with power-packed scores of 92 (against GT) and 57 (against LSG), Gaikwad would be itching to keep going in the same vein, just to prove his worth and case for a recall in India’s white ball squad in a World Cup year.
With their domestic bowlers looking pedestrian this season as well, MI, hurting badly due to the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, will bank on the speed and skill of Jofra Archer to stop the likes of Gaikwad and Dhoni from running away from this match. The English pacer went for 33 in 4 overs on his MI debut, against RCB, but can be counted upon to get back to his best on a Wankhede strip that offers decent carry.

7

MI would desperately hope that their star-studded batting line-up comprising of Indian captain Rohit Sharma, his opening partner Ishan Kishan, Australia’s star allrounder Cameron Green and the world’s No 1 T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav fires early into the tournament, and that too in a big-ticket game like this.
Quizzed about whether he was expecting the key Indian batters in his team to come good, MI’s batting coach Kieron Pollard said, “I believe all batters have to fire. I do not think we should not single out any individual. Cricket is played with eleven players, and again, the tournament has just started so everyone is just looking to start (on a) high. . . yes we did not get off to a great start as a batting unit but in the end we managed a decent total in Bangalore. Let us see what happens since we are back at Wankhede.”

8

He stressed that “MI have no concerns about Surya’s form”.
MI would be pleased with the way the young Tilak Varma, whose 46-ball unbeaten 84 was the main reason they scored 171-7 in their first game despite having collapsed to 48 for 4, has gotten off the blocks this season.

Mumbai: MCA honours MS Dhoni, set to build a memorial where Mahi hit the 2011 World Cup-winning six

03:04

Mumbai: MCA honours MS Dhoni, set to build a memorial where Mahi hit the 2011 World Cup-winning six

While they would be looking to pounce on CSK’s domestic pacers Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Tushar Deshpande, both warned by Dhoni for bowling too many wides and no-balls, MI’s batters need to be wary of the swing of Deepak Chahar and the dangerous off-spin of English allrounder Moeen Ali.
It was Ali’s spell of 4-26 which helped CSK eke out a narrow 12-run win over LSG in their last game, after the latter looked on top at one stage.

Refreshed after a week’s break following the eight-wicket pasting at the hands of RCB, MI, who played four debutants in the opener, would be buoyed by the prospect of playing their first home game at the Wankhede this season.
That they have a 7-3 record at this venue against CSK should give the hosts plenty of confidence going into the clash. While CSK look slight favourites, in a game of this magnitude, recent form can assure little of what can happen.
